The History of the Corporation
The Ceylon Fisheries Corporation was established in 1964 under the State Industrial Corporations Act. No.49 of 1957 and commenced its commercial operations in 1965. At the commencement, the objectives of the Corporation covered the entire fisheries sectors. The objectives of the Corporation were given in the Extra Ordinary Gazette Notification, number 14186 01st October 1964 is mentioned below.
۞ The Corporation should directly or through authorized agents engage in fish production
using trawlers in deep sea fishing operations.
۞ The Corporation should directly or through authorized agents engage in fish processing
(canning and drying, processing) and in the production of fish by products.
۞ The Corporation should directly or through authorized agents engage in the distribution
and sale of fish on wholesale and retail basis.
۞ The construction and maintenance of fishery harbours, anchorages inclusive of cold
storage rooms.
۞ Import and sales of fishing gear and necessary equipments to the fisheries industry.
۞ The Corporation should act for and on behalf of the Department of Fisheries or any
other Government Department for the purpose of development of the fishing industry.
۞ The construction of boats and small ships for the fisheries industry.
۞ To provide facilities for the repairs and maintenance of fishing boats.
۞ Manufacture and sale of fisheries equipments.
The CFC is a Statutory Government Organization, which is fully owned by the State and has it’s unitary status as the apex body of the fisheries industry under the Ministry of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources Development.
Present Situation
Current Activities
Following are the main business activities being carried out by the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation at present.
- Purchase of fish directly from fishermen through our regional offices.
- Import of fish.
- Distribute and sale of fish at a reasonable rate to the consumers through our retail fish outlets.
- Sale of packet fish at a reasonable rate through State Institutions like Lak Sathosa, Co-op Cities etc. to reduce the cost of living of the consumers.
- Supply of fish to all Government Hospitals.
- Conducting of Mobile fish sales in rural areas.
- Conducting of Fish Mela sales in popular towns.
- Production and sale of fish fillet.
- Production and sale of ice to fisheries sector and other traders.
- Providing cold room facilities to fisheries sector and other traders.
- Providing processing facilities to foreign fishing vessels.
- Purchase of fish from the foreign fishing vessels.
Current Situation of Fish Trading
The Ceylon Fisheries Corporation has introduced new project for expanding the fish distribution net work since June 2010. Under this project targets were determined. This achievement is given below charts.

Flash Budget 2011
In the overall context the Ceylon Fisheries Corporation is targeting an impressive sales prediction of Rs.4.2 billion for 2011 and cost of sales of Rs.3.3 billion thus ensuring an approximately Rs.876 million gross revenue. It is intended to achieve ultimate net profit of over Rs.150 million for the year.
The pricing policy of Ceylon Fisheries Corporation was determined in order to ensure affordable prices to consumers which are much below the average market prices. If not the predicted revenue would have been more than Rs.5 billion.
The budget proposed for 2011 is formulated in keeping with the policy of the Government, Ministry and CFC to assure that CFC would fulfill it’s responsibilities towards the general public by assuring quality fish at an affordable prices freely available at stalls throughout the island.
